The New Saints bid to close gap ahead of huge clash

The New Saints have an opportunity to try and close the gap on JD Cymru Premier leaders Penybont with a rearranged match at Briton Ferry Llansawel tonight (7.45pm).

Saints head to South Wales in second place in the table, four points behind Penybont, with two games in hand.

The division’s top two will meet on Saturday when Penybont travel to Oswestry, so it’s another big week ahead for TNS.

Saints initially made the trip to Briton Ferry early last month, with the match abandoned in the early stages owing to a waterlogged pitch.

Head coach Craig Harrison, looking ahead to tonight’s match, said: “It’s important because it’s obviously a game in hand against Briton Ferry on Wednesday night, so forget the Penybont one, that’s in the distant future.

“We’ll deal with that once we play Briton Ferry.

“We’ve got a lot of respect for Briton Ferry and we understand that it’s going to be a tough game away from home."

Briton Ferry Llansawel are currently bottom of the JD Cymru Premier with eight points from 14 league games, although they do have two games in hand on Aberystwyth Town, the team directly above them.

This evening’s rearranged fixture means a quick return to South Wales for TNS following Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Cardiff Metropolitan University in the third round of the JD Welsh Cup.

After the hosts took the lead, Ryan Brobbel soon equalised for the Saints, before Jordan Williams scored twice to send the Park Hall side through to round four of the competition.

Saints resume their European campaign next Thursday, November 28, when they will play their fourth league phase match in the Uefa Conference League against Swedish club Djurgarden at Shrewsbury Town’s Croud Meadow.
