Preview - Women's FA Cup: Shrewsbury v Sheffield

Leanne Rimmer says Shrewsbury Town's women's team have a 'debt to pay' when they take on Sheffield in the FA Cup this weekend.

Town's pulsating 3-2 victory against Northampton earlier this month saw the team make the second round proper for the first time in their history.

That has now set up a mouthwatering clash with Sheffield - the side that knocked them out of the competition on penalties last season - at Shawbury this Sunday.

The match kicks off at 2 pm with Salop seeking to go one step further and get to the third round.

Director of the Town's women's team, Rimmer, believes they were unfortunate on that occasion.

She said: "Just by pure coincidence, Sheffield were the team that knocked us out on penalties last year, which makes this even more exciting.

"We've got a debt to pay there. I think we can get our own back.

"We felt like we played the best football last year, and we were really unfortunate to go out on penalties. But it's also a team that we know a little bit about, so obviously we've been doing our homework on that.

"It's a tighter game. We could have West Brom or Wolves."

There is so much at stake this weekend when the two teams meet, with huge financial benefits for both.

Town were awarded £6,000 for their win in the last round of the competition, and the victor this weekend will be awarded £8,000.

Not only that, if you get through to the third round proper you are guaranteed a minimum of £9,000, with £35,000 going to teams who win that clash - so there is much to play for.

And for Town, who are self-sustainable and separate from the men's side of the football club, the importance of this prize money cannot be understated.

"This is huge for us," Rimmer continued. "For people who do not have the context for it. There used to be barely anything in the Women's FA Cup.

"The last couple of years they have actually put money into it. For this year we are now into the second round proper - whoever wins this game gets £8,000 for winning.

"For us as an independent club, that is huge money, even getting through the last round was £6,000. And again, that is just unbelievable for us.

"We are self-sustainable. So for us, that money means that we can keep ourselves afloat for the season without having to put extra pressure on ourselves to do fundraising events.

"If we'd have got knocked out in that Northampton game, we might have been looking at having to do some fundraising or just really keep an eye on money for the rest of the season to, you know, pay for pitches, pay for referees and all of it."

Darel Tidman-Poole is head coach of the team, and they were on the receiving end of a disappointing defeat against Shifnal last time out. They will be looking to bounce back this weekend in the big one.
