Salop chairman Roland Wycherley revealed in a statement when Paul Hurst was sacked, that the club was in advanced negotiations with a party interested in buying Town.

And now, in chief executive Liam Dooley's latest open letter to supporters, he revealed the club are in that exclusivity period.

He said: "I am delighted to say following the chairman’s statement earlier this month, we are now officially in an exclusivity period with our new potential owners.

"Speaking on behalf of the board, we are all really excited for what the future holds as we look to build on the fantastic foundations laid by Roland Wycherley.

"Rest assured everyone at the club is doing their best to facilitate this transition and we will share any further details when we can."

Wycherley was born in the Castlefields area of Shrewsbury and was successful in the vending and hotel industry before taking over the club in 1996.

The Salop chairman has always said he will only sell the football club to someone he believes will do the right thing for the supporters. Any completed takeover is still subject to the EFL owners' and directors' tests.

The news adds to optimism around the Croud Meadow at the moment after Gareth Ainsworth was appointed as boss last week.

He is set to take charge of his first game when they welcome Chris Davies' high-flying Birmingham City to Shropshire.

Town are in desperate need of a win as they go into the weekend rooted to the bottom of the League One table with just eight points from the 15 league matches they have played.

Salop's poor run of form this season has put increased pressure on chairman Wycherley to sell the club with fans showing their disappointment when they were knocked out of the FA Cup at Salford earlier this month.
