Golf prizes handed out at county awards dinner

The Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs’ annual dinner saw the senior team awarded the West Midland League Trophy, writes Dan Hickey.

Captain Damian Scholes and his team were presented the award by club president Charles Sievewright at the Telford Hotel.

Other key awards went to Tom Kerr, who won the Order of Merit, and Jay Showell, who received the Amateur Championship medal.

Scholes was joined by his team-mates Alan McCafferty, Steve Hawk, Paul McGarry, Tony Cheese, Ben Gilg, John Bennett, Nigel Chesters and Damian Magill.

More than 185 club members and invited guests attended the evening, where medals and colours were awarded to David Richards, Nick Evans, Ryan Forrest and Sam Roberts.

James Platford has since won the Burdass Trophy at Church Stretton Golf Club.

He represented Burghill Golf Club, beating out Herefordshire Golf Club’s Ady Marshall in a sudden-death play-off at the first extra hole.
