Non-league previews: Telford Town won't sacrifice cup glory in hunt for promotion
Telford Town manager Matthew Boswell side will not be weakened by rotations as a deep and fully fit squad hosts Wem Town in the County Cup, writes Dan Hickey.
They compete in the cup off the back of going unbeaten in 17 games, beating Dudley Sports 7-1 in their last West Midlands League Premier Division match.
Boswell is keen for his side to climb the non-league pyramid as quickly as possible.
“The goal, undoubtedly, is to win the league – without question," he said. "That was our objective in the season, and it remains absolutely unchanged.
“We need to get this club out of this division and into a higher league, to step six, as quickly as possible.”
Boswell has been manager of the side for three seasons, with success following a strict three-year plan.
“It's been three years in the making," he said. "We had real, clear aims and objectives when we took over and that was: first year to finish eighth, second year to finish fourth and the third year to win it and get promoted out of the league.
“First year we finished eighth, second year we finished third and then this year, obviously, is to be determined.”
They go into the game as clear favourites, with a squad full of quality: “Most people say rotate as if you're going to weaken the quality – when we rotate, we don't.”
Long-term absence Ryan Mills returns from injury having restarted training this week, but it’s not all luck.
“We're lucky players are coming back, and I expect us to go into January with every single player in the squad fitting available," added Boswell. “We do take care of them, though. We do use, for example, GPS vests and we do take care of the players. We're always looking at the workload of the players and what they're undertaking.
“So, anybody that has a heavy game on the Saturday, let's say the player runs a heavy 12K – high intensity events, lots of decelerations – we will put them into a session on the Thursday which is easier.
“And then players that have not played on that Saturday, for example, they'll have a much tougher session on Thursday. So, we do balance player work with workloads out to try and maximise the availability.”
