Salop were soundly beaten on Saturday by Matt Bloomfield's high-flying Wycombe Wanderers side 4-1.
It was the second successive week Town had been thumped by that scoreline, and it has left them 10 points from safety at the bottom of the League One table.
Ainsworth says that with eight goals conceded in the last two games, Shrewsbury have got worse rather than better from a defensive perspective.
"We will have to make changes to make us more solid," the head coach said. "I am hopeful I am going to be able to get into the boys again this week, to work again on defending.
"We did it all last week, because after a 4-1 defeat away at Cambridge you work on that - not attacking.
"We worked on being more solid, and in training, it looked good, but when it comes to a game, we concede too many, and that is the end of the story, we have got to do better.
"We have scored goals, that has improved, but the conceding goals, that has got worse if anything and that is on me. I have got to set them up in a way where we are not conceding goals.
"I will have to have a real good think about how we are going to set up. Because we are going to end up way adrift if we keep chucking four goals in.
"We just need to get through this storm because it is a storm at the moment, and it is not a nice one to be in."
Beryly Lubala got the opener for The Chairboys, before West Brom loanee Caleb Taylor doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time.
Town were breached for the third time when Fred Onyedinma headed home at the back post. Jordan Shipley's free-kick gave Town a slimmer of hope before Dan Udoh came back to haunt his old side by putting the fixture completely beyond doubt.
Town have 11 points from 19 games - a bleak picture - but Ainsworth still remains optimistic he can get Town out of it.
He said: "Back-to-back wins is six points and then it becomes four points (the gap).
"That is not far away. We have got some winnable games coming up without a doubt. I may have to change formation I may have to change personnel.
"I will make sure we will give ourselves the best chance in those games. I am hoping this is the end of the 4-1 scorelines.
"This has been a tough couple of weeks. Last week, with the changes, but this week I am just really disappointed with the way we have shipped four goals in."
He takes his side to Wigan next weekend. They got a 2-0 victory against Bolton on Saturday so will come into the game full of confidence.
