Wolves have the worst defence in the Premier League having conceded 40 times so far this campaign.

Even Southampton, who are rooted to the bottom of the table on just five points from 16 games, have not conceded as many as Wolves.

They are light on numbers at the back after Yerson Mosquera damaged the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee during the second half of their game with Aston Villa back in September - which they went on to lose 3-1. He is set for a significant period on the sidelines.

And they also decided to sell Max Kilman for £40 million to Premier League rivals West Ham and not replace him in the summer window.

At centre-back, Santi Bueno has plugged the gap, alongside Craig Dawson and Toti Gomes but they have been unable to stop conceding goals - and a central defender is a priority in January.

Pereira is set to be named as Wolves new boss imminently, with the Portuguese set to sign an 18-month contract at Molineux.

The 56-year-old's managerial career began almost two decades ago when he won two league titles with Porto.

His first game in charge will be this weekend as they make the trip to the King Power Stadium to take on fellow strugglers Leicester City.

Tommy Doyle will be one of the Wolves players seeking to get into Pereira's first starting XI, and he thinks they can get out of the position they are in.

"I really do believe that we can turn this around," Doyle said. "As players, as leaders, we have to step up.

“If I can do that myself, then I will, I'll take it upon myself to be that person, and hopefully we can turn this around because the fans deserve a lot more.”
