Wellens' side got the better of Salop in east London on Saturday as Jamie Donely's goal in the 63rd minute proved to be the games decisive moment.
The result leaves Shrewsbury eight points from 20th-placed Bristol Rovers who won at Cambridge United on Saturday.
But despite Shrewsbury's challenging position - Wellens thinks Town will avoid slipping into League Two.
He said: "I think they have got a good squad. They have a top manager at this level who has won multiple promotions and do you know what... I think they will stay up.
"I think they have got a lot going for them."
But Wellens felt his side were good value for the points at Brisbane Road as they ended Salop's four-match unbeaten run.
"Credit to both sets of players. It started lethargic, both sets of players were tired, and then they put everything into the match.
"The last 10 minutes the pitch was big it was open, and the energy levels were very low with the number of games.
"I don't think we gave many chances away. The first half was pretty dead - I get it everybody is tired after the Christmas and New Year period, not just the players but the supporters as well.
"But I thought in the second half we could have scored a few more, we dominated in terms of territory against a well organised, resilient team."
