The 42-year-old, who also spent time on loan at Shrewsbury in his playing days and went on to coach at Wolves and managed AFC Telford United, has left Luton by mutual agreement after two years at the club.

He was appointed in November 2022 and took the Hatters to the Premier League, before suffering relegation from the top flight.

Back in the Championship Luton have struggled this season and slipped to 20th in the league with just seven wins from their opening 26 fixtures, resulting in Edwards' departure.

The club's statement read: "Luton Town Football Club can confirm that Rob Edwards has left his role as manager by mutual agreement.

"We could have not wished for a better man to understand what it takes to be manager of Luton Town, one who acted as an ambassador for the club and community in the glare of the world's media spotlight.

"The current campaign back in the Championship has clearly not progressed as anticipated, and after holding amicable talks following Monday's defeat at QPR, the board and Rob have agreed to part with immediate effect.

"While the process to appoint a new manager is already under way, Paul Trollope and Richie Kyle, aided by Mick Harford, will take charge of the squad for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Nottingham Forest."
