Salop won their third game under Ainsworth on a famous night in Shropshire as his team got the better of Phil Parkinson's big-spending Red Dragons.
John Marquis gave Salop the lead in the 17th minute when he got on the end of George Lloyd's knockdown.
But Wrexham hit back just six minutes later when Steven Fletcher headed home an equaliser.
Town re-took the lead within two minutes of the second when Marquis smuggled the ball over the line after he had a penalty saved by Arthur Okonkwo.
“It was absolutely phenomenal,” Ainsworth said about his side's victory. “The work-rate, the way the week has been, for those boys to go out there and put that performance in tells me we have every chance this season of staying in this league.
“That was a phenomenal shift from everybody, it was epitomised by those front two as they never stopped working and never stopped running.
“John deserved both of his goals, and Lloydy deserved man of the match.
“They were absolutely brilliant, but they only do that because they know how solid we are behind them.
“The defenders were brilliant as well, and we had a plan in place, and I thought it worked well.
“Wrexham had to change a couple of formations, and we changed again to match them.
“I am really really pleased. All of the talk before the game was about if Wrexham won, they go top of the league; nobody said that if Shrewsbury win, they might go above Crawley.
“I said let's go and ram it down people's throats, and we used that as a bit of motivation. They have been super professional tonight. We put the plan in place and executed it, and the whole of Shrewsbury is happy tonight.”
"We took a few knocks tonight, and it took Toto (Nsiala), Nursey (George Nurse), Jordan Shipley and Carl Winchester to come on. They were big changes.
"It has been great. There was big cheer in there. I have just given them three days off. We have had a tough week."
