The 30-year-old is currently playing for Eastleigh in the National League and has worked with Salop boss Gareth Ainsworth before.
Gape, a midfielder, had a distinguished career with The Chairboys making over 170 league appearances between August 2016 and June 2023.
So far this campaign, he has played 10 times for Eastleigh but could be tempted to a move to Shropshire with Shrewsbury seeking to bring a midfielder in this month.
Should Town acquire his services, it would be the second signing of the January transfer window after Callum Stewart also arrived from non-league on Wednesday.
After a brilliant cross-border derby win against Wrexham on Thursday night, Town are not back in action until next weekend when they make the trip to The Valley to play Charlton.
Meanwhile, Ainsworth says John Marquis has been 'nothing but a leader' since he arrived in Shropshire as head coach.
The striker scored twice in the cross-border derby on Thursday night to guide Salop to a historic victory against their arch-rivals Wrexham.
And the Town coach had nothing but praise for the team's top scorer.
"Since I've walked in the door, John has been nothing but a leader," he said about Marquis. "He probably wasn't in favour too much before I was here.
"I've looked at the stats. He was in and out of the team, and that's frustrating for somebody like John.
"He's got a lot of experience and a lot of leadership to give. He just needed something to grab hold of, and we've encouraged him to be that person, to be that frontman, to be that talisman, on and off the pitch.
"Selected or not selected, because he's not been selected a few times for me too, but he's still been that leader.
"But his experience showed against Wrexham. The first goal, he took really, really well. Great finish.
"People were thinking he took one too many touches. What a finish.
"He's certainly a player that has thrived under myself and Dobbo (Richard Dobson).
"He works technically hard. He works every day on his finishing."
Marquis is the club's top scorer this season across all competitions with the seven goals he has scored - six of those have come in the league while the other came in the FA Cup defeat at Salford.
