AFC Telford boss Kevin Wilkin gives his verdict on squad strength

AFC Telford United boss Kevin Wilkin believes his squad is as strong as it has been all season.

The Bucks went top of the Southern Central Premier on Saturday thanks to goals from Matty Stenson and Jimmy Armson in a 2-0 victory over Stamford at the SEAH Stadium.

Scunthorpe United loanee Max Brogan was thrown straight in from the start as Telford took advantage of a slip-up from Kettering Town to move to the summit.

Wilkin said: "This season, small moments have ended up costing us taking all three points on more occasions than we'd like, but again, we look at the closeness of the league, and anyone can beat anyone if they're having a good day.

"You can be on the end of some tough moments, and we have been this season, without a doubt, but the most important thing is getting the three points, staying strong and hopefully getting the other side of it with most everybody still fit and available.

"With the addition of Max, it's probably as strong a squad as we've had all season. We’re disappointed to lose Byron (Moore) again, but Jakub (Kruszynski) got off the bench and put in a great shift.”

Telford had to be patient to get the three points, but Armson made their destination academic with a second goal for the hosts, six minutes after Stenson’s opener and five minutes before full-time.

“Our concentration level was really good," added Wilkin. "We might have been a little bit fortuitous with the first one, but the second one's a fantastic move, isn't it? It kind of allowed us to win the game almost in the manner that we would have liked.”

The Bucks sit two points ahead of long-time leaders Kettering, who experienced another stumble, losing 3-2 at Redditch United. The Poppies have two games in hand over the Bucks, but it’s far from a two-horse race, with other teams waiting on their shoulders for any slip.

Wilkin’s side has no midweek fixture, their next game being at Alvechurch on Saturday, but they then have three consecutive home matches, two of them in midweek, as they play catch-up on several fixtures postponed around the Christmas period.
