Bowls round-up: Harries wraps up latest Bandit Bowls event

Denied the previous weekend, there was no stopping Scott Harries from winning the latest Bandit Bowls one-day competition, writes Malcolm Fletcher.

The county senior team star enjoyed his third BB one-day success out of the last five by coming out on top of 19 entries at Edgmond.

Harries – beaten in the final by Joe Dicken seven days earlier - defeated his Sir John Bayley clubmate Dan Taylor 21-18 in Saturday’s final as a total fund of £133 was paid out on the day by promoter Jamie Brookes.

There were two close semi-finals too with Harries being Sinclair’s Potteries Panel-bound man Danny Williams 21-16 while Taylor edged out Terry Howard from Wrexham 21-17.

Quarter-final scores: Williams 21 Dave James 7; Harries 21 Stuart Rutter 12; Taylor 21 Joe Dicken 15; Howard 21 Liz Ruscoe 18.

A bowler in the Shrewsbury Senior Citizens League boasted a superb 100 per cent record to help his team to a championship.

John Price delivered all the right stuff for Bishop’s Castle A with 20 wins from 20 games as they finally topped division three of the six-a-side league after finishing runners-up in 2023.

The reward for the club and individual was prize money presented at the league’s AGM at Old Shrewsbury BC by president Margaret Cooper and chairman Roger Whitfield.

Divisional champions. One: Battlefield A; Two: Hadnall; Three: Bishop’s Castle A; Four: Meole Brace E; Five: Ye Olde Crofte.

Points will mean prizes on Thursday night for the Shropshire bowlers at the last cash challenger games before the launch of the Potteries Panel proper next week.

Six men with county connections feature in winner takes all matches on Biddulph’s artificial green, promoter Laura Browny saying: “We have a superb line-up, including the top two players in the country in Callum Wraight and Greg Smith.”

Reigning Panel champion Wraight (Castlefields) will take on Matt Fellows for £150 while Smith (Wrockwardine Wood) has a £200 showdown against Lee Brown.

It’s a £200 pot for Danny Williams (Sinclair) versus Mark Lunn while Premier League rivals Andy Armstrong (Ifton) and Bylet’s Joe Dicken will play for £50, as will Alex Hassall of Whitchurch League side Shavington as he meets Martin Simcock.

The cash challenger ties started last week and Darrell Handley of Mid Shropshire League champions Shifnal beat Adam Coxon 16-9 to pocket £50.
