AFC Telford boss sings Matty Stenson's praises
Kevin Wilkin has suggested that AFC Telford United top-scorer Matty Stenson is in the conversation to be considered ‘the best striker at the level.’
After netting again on Tuesday night Stenson equalled Lee Moore’s club record of scoring in five consecutive games and could break against Harborough Town today.
And Wilkin insisted he will do everything he can to ensure the Bucks continue to see the best of their star striker for the remainder of the season.
“I think he’s only played 20 games and has scored 17 goals, so his ratio of minutes to goals is fantastic,” the Telford boss said. “If he can continue on this run of form he’ll arguably be the best striker at this level.”
Wilkin continued: “You need your best players out there playing all the time and he’s certainly one of those for us, but we’re aware that he can be a little bit fragile and if we lose him he’ll be a major loss.
“We didn’t have him for about six weeks earlier on in the season, and there were a few games there that we weren’t able to take anything out of.
“In the Barwell game we didn’t have him or Ricardo (Dinanga), and we certainly looked a bit toothless on the night, which is no surprise.
“I think in any side when you know you’ve got a player there who can go and get you a goal it gives everyone a real lift.
“He’s been our go-to player and had been really well complimented by Ricardo before he left us.
“We need as many of those types of players in our squad as possible, and that’s why we’ll look to wrap him up in cotton wool and get him out there all the time, because players like him are difficult to find.”
