Salop signed striker Vadaine Oliver on loan until the end of the season from Bradford on Monday afternoon.
But despite working right up to the deadline with the hope of bringing more reinforcements to the Croud Meadow, Town were unable to make anymore additions before the window shut at 11 pm.
It means over the course of the last month seven players have left Shropshire while five have joined Ainsworth's survival push.
Speaking in an interview on the club website Ainsworth said: "Believe me... we have tried. We tried to get two more names in. It has been really tough. First of all some of the money that has been spent it is crackers. We will not put this club in jeopardy by getting involved in some crazy spending at this time of year, it is just not the right thing.
"Other clubs seem to have that money, and the big thing is once you see a club spend it, you get sucked into we must spend that, we must not do this.
"No way, I have really kept myself calm on deadline days in the past.
"So trying to get a couple in has been tough. We tried to get some in early in the window, and that was tough - players I have worked with before."
New arrival, Oliver, is closing in on 500 professional appearances, and Ainsworth was delighted to have him.
"It has been my first deadline day, and we have got one in," he continued. "Really pleased we have got Vadaine Oliver in from Bradford. I think he is going to be great. He is all action, the way we play getting that ball forward I think Vadaine is going to be a real threat.
"It offloads the forwards who have been doing so well lately."
