Back in December, Salop fans would have looked at the winter window with optimism.

It was the first chance Gareth Ainsworth had to put his mark on his Town squad, and it was an opportunity to inject new-life into a stuttering group of players.

What the head coach has done since then is improve what he has at his disposal immeasurably. That is not up for debate, it is a fact. Town have picked up 15 points from the 13 games he has overseen in Shropshire.

They are harder to beat, horrible to play against, and they have got results from situations when it looked like they had no chance.

He has his side punching above their weight in the third tier of English football  and has improved their chances of staying in the division.

There is a feeling Ainsworth has managed to get more out of this group of players than anyone thought was possible.

But it felt like the squad needed a shot in the arm if they were to keep up their good form and reduce the seven-point deficit to Northampton.
