AFC Telford boss: We know we need to add
AFC Telford United boss Kevin Wilkin stressed that supporters' calls for reinforcements had not fallen on deaf ears.
The Bucks' squad has been weakened in recent weeks by the sale of Ricardo Dinanga to Shrewsbury Town and the return of loanee Alex Gudger to Brackley Town before he subsequently joined title rivals Kettering Town.
But Wilkin also called on members of his current squad to ease the goalscoring burden on Matty Stenson after their 1-1 draw with rock-bottom Biggleswade Town in the Southern Central Premier on Tuesday night.
“We know we need to add one or two bodies to the group," said the boss. "Goalscorers are the hardest players to go and find, players who are going to come into the group and have that effect and stick the ball in the back of the net.
"Hopefully from within the group, there are players there that will step up and will start to get goals themselves and we'll certainly need to on that front. We can't rely solely on Matty (Stenson) for goals.”
The Bucks extended their lead at the top of the table despite the disappointment, aided by yet more tales of the unexpected in what is a hugely unpredictable division.
Bedford Town and Kettering Town were both on the wrong end of 1-0 defeats away from home, to Royston Town and Banbury United respectively, in a league crying out for a team to take things by the horns.
Asked how he might address the deficiencies evident in his team, Wilkin said: “We'll address it on Thursday (training) and try to make people understand how.
"There's no issue for lads getting themselves in the right zone against Harborough on Saturday or against Bedford.
"It almost takes care of itself to a certain degree, but then you have to play bottom of the league and find that little extra.
"Lots of players, managers will know exactly what I'm on about - getting yourself in that right mental state, not giving soft goals away and allowing the opposition any encouragement.
"They (Biggleswade) come here, and there won't be any fear about them.
"They'll enjoy playing on that surface and moving the ball and we've got to show enough as a group to be able to get through it.
"We’re lucky that the guys behind the goal (supporters) keep encouraging us, to really stay with us throughout the game to go and find something out of it.”
