The New Saints in charge at the top after thrashing title rivals
The New Saints extended their lead at the top of the JD Cymru Premier to six points with an impressive 4-0 victory over second-placed Penybont.
Danny Davies gave Saints an early lead in Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash at Park Hall, with Aramide Oteh, Ryan Brobbel and Ben Clark on target in the second half.
Saints have an opportunity to move further clear when they travel to Caernarfon Town to play their game in hand tomorrow night.
“I thought it was really strong,” said assistant manager Chris Seargeant, reflecting on Saints’ performance. “I think it was as dominant as we’re probably going to get.
"Look, we could have a couple more couldn’t we, but on the balance of play and more the control and the possession, as well as creating the chances, we ticked a lot of boxes today, so we're happy, yes, and obviously, ideally, we go and win away at Caernarfon on Tuesday and you’re nine points clear.”
Defender Davies sent Saints on their way to a seventh league win in a row as early as the 10th minute when he headed home Adam Wilson’s fine cross.
Saints doubled their advantage eight minutes into the second half, with Wilson, on loan from Bradford City, again the provider as his inviting cross from the right was turned in from close range by Oteh for his 15th goal of the season.
Brobbel added his name to the list of goalscorers in the 63rd minute when he found the top corner of the net with an excellent free kick from outside the penalty area.
There was still time for substitute Clark to complete the scoring two minutes from time when he broke into the box and produced another fine finish to wrap up a good day’s work for Saints.
