Wilkin left frustrated by another AFC Telford draw

Kevin Wilkin couldn’t hide his frustration as his AFC Telford United side were held 2-2 at Bishop’s Stortford, with the hosts netting a late penalty kick, writes Rich Worton.

After twice allowing a lead to slip, the Bucks were nudged off the Southern Central Premier summit by a third successive draw, while others around them won.

Despite the hosts probably being worth a point, Wilkin acknowledged his team’s contribution to affairs.

“I'm disappointed that we haven't won," he said. "I thought we looked really well in control of the game.

"To take the lead away from home like we have and then get knocked back with another soft goal… we found a little bit more again and got ourselves back into the lead, and not seeing the game over the line is disappointing for us. I can't hide from that.

"We’ve had a go, but there are certain moments where we've got to go and do better.”

Matty Stenson’s 19th goal of the season put the Bucks ahead midway through the first half, but Luka Chalwell’s debut goal for the Bishops had them level within three minutes.

The Bucks restored the lead with Jimmy Armson heading in his ninth of the campaign four minutes before the interval.

However, the Bucks faded as the Bishops turned the tide, with Wilkin’s side losing captain Sam Whittall to injury as the pressure grew.

Ellis Myles’ foul on Mark Haines gave Cole DaSilva a chance to level from 12 yards in the 83rd minute - one he duly took to earn his team a fair share of the points.

Both sides would feel passionate about the penalty awarded by referee Chris Poole. Although Wilkin felt the officials had some culpability, he also felt his side was as much at fault for not taking the game away from the hosts and making any officiating inconsistency moot.

He said: “It's great to score two goals on the road again, but the manner in which we concede and allowing somebody officiating to have as big an effect on the game is a bit difficult to to swallow, but we have to. We have to pull together and make sure we go again on Saturday.”

“In critical areas, you have to stay really focused and just do the nasty things well and the basic things really well.

"There are long periods of the game where we do that and evidence of that.

"If you look back to the Alvechurch game, we come in there at half-time losing the game, and everyone's scratching their heads, and it's 'how do I make sure that we are nastier and harder to score against?'.

"Every opposition will have a period against you, and we've just got to recognise that a little bit better. They’re terrific lads; they keep going and keep showing the endeavour, but it's maybe putting that little bit of a nasty edge on us is something I’ve got to find.”
