Bowls round-up: Winter league reaches crunch moment, while junior competition is launched
Any doubts that Chirk will falter in their pursuit of the title in Shropshire’s top winter bowling league can be put to bed on Tuesday night, writes Malcolm Fletcher.
The Welsh border club take on a Calverhall side that is cut adrift at the bottom of the District Invitation league at the Whitchurch club after losing their 12 matches to date.
Chirk will aim to cash in and back up a 7-3 victory over Adderley last week (111-74 on aggregate) that featured three single-figure cards and left the leaders 12 points clear.
Second-placed Malpas Sports hammered Bridgewater 9-1 (123-101) to try and keep the pressure on while Elephant & Castle won the bottom-of-the-pile clash with Calerhall 10 (1126-47) with Ade Jennings, Scott Moseley, Craig Wilson and Josh Cotton all single figure winners.
Woore, with sights on finishing third, meet Bridgewater tomorrow, District tackle Adderley on Thursday and Malpas face Crewe on Friday as the programme races towards a March 14 last night on the back green.

A Telford bowler’s determination to get more youngsters playing the sport has seen him launch a new competition.
Ian Pessall is organising a Junior Trailblazer day at Newport on Sunday, July 27, for a maximum of 32 players who are under-18 that day.
Sponsored by Taylor Support, the backers of the Premier League, the winner will receive the Paul Taylor Trophy.
The day will start with a round robin format of 13-up games using handicaps based on the experience of the entries, leading to knockout ties in main and consolation competitions.
Entries cost £5 and there will be £500 prize money if all the places are taken, names to go to Pessall via Facebook.
Pessall, son of Shropshire legend Keith, was a member of the Hadley USC team that won the Shropshire Cup last year, when his young son Finley played for Allscott Heath.

Having two teams playing in one division of a league is an issue facing Much Wenlock Bowling Cub this year.
Members at Wednesday's AGM in the Methodist Room in King Street (7pm) will hear that the club’s A team is facing relegation to join the B side in division two of the Highley League.
Planning how to try and go one better in the Mid Shropshire League’s Ashton Shield after losing in the last two finals is also on the agenda for the annual meeting.
Meanwhile, Shelton BC have launched an appeal for new recruits as they count down to their AGM on Sunday, February 23 (12 noon in the club house).
“We are still looking for players for the first division on Tuesday nights in the Tanners League,” said a club spokesman.
Other AGMs coming up - Highley on Saturday at the Severn Centre at 11am; Sir John Bayley on Sunday at 12 noon in the club.
