AFC Telford seek support for record-breaking goal ace

Matty Stenson broke an AFC Telford United - but boss Kevin Wilkin wants to take the goalscoring burden off his star man.

Stenson's brace against Leiston on Saturday took him to 23 league goals for the season - the most by any Bucks player in the AFC era, surpassing Kyle Perry's previous high tally of 22.

Wilkin is all too aware that Stenson is the only out-and-out striker in a small squad since Reece Styche’s departure.

The search for support for Stenson continues, with the Bucks being knocked back on one target last week and casting an eye over a couple of other options in training on Thursday.

“We do need a more orthodox central striker that is going to take some of the burden off Matthew," said the boss. "It's just finding the right one and getting the right one over the line.

"We've had a couple working with us, and whether I take the chance and get them into the fold? Maybe we will.

"I want to be as understanding of who's coming into the group and why they're coming into the group and what they're going to offer to us, but if we lose Matty, it'll be a major loss to us, no doubt about that, so we’ll try to keep him in the zone that he’s in and keep him fit for as long as we can.”

Stenson’s second goal, in the 55th minute, took him to his sixth brace of the season, but his chances of securing a first hat-trick ended when he was substituted, a move that concerned fans but which appeared largely precautionary.
