25th Anniversary a success for Telford Ladies Afternoon League

The driving force behind the Telford Ladies Afternoon League has hailed its 25th anniversary celebration as a "fantastic" occasion.

Secretary Mabel Finnigan was ecstatic after 147 people attended at Telford's Holiday Inn. "It was an absolutely fantastic day," she said.

But the highlight for the Madeley-based secretary was a gathering of those who had played in the league's first Monday afternoon matches 25 years ago for a celebration picture – and there were 25 of them!

Finnigan has been secretary since the league was launched in 1991 and now has her sister Sybil Rhodes as chairwoman and Audrey Smelt as treasurer.

The club in the spotlight was undoubtedly Maddocks. The Oakengates-based club's Red team won division one while the Blue team finished top of division two.

Yvonne Needham of Maddocks Red won the first division averages with 19 wins from 20; Lisa Pessall of Hadley USC took the second division with 18 straight wins.
