Burway on a roll with triples bowls success

Six Burway boys celebrated their stunning 14-0 whitewash of Premier League champions Sir John Bayley by featuring in the final of the Flowfit Ludlow League’s triples.

Playing on their home green, 2012 County Merit winner Kiah Roberts and father and son, Len and Nick Lewis had that winning feeling 48 hours on from their Bayley bashing.

They beat Burway team-mates Wayne Rogers, Kevin Dovey and Duncan Pressley 21-19 in the final, Len Lewis being particularly happy as he’d come in as a last-minute replacement for Russell Davies, who was unable to play due to family commitments.

“The final promised to be very good and those that stayed to watch it weren’t disappointed with the quality on show,” said league secretary Steve Burmingham.

“Nick, Len and Kiah came out all guns blazing and with a lead of 16-4 looked likely to win very comfortably. A change in the order of Rogers, Dovey and Pressley proved a masterstroke as, with Dovey leading well, they got back into the game to be 16-12 behind.”

A huge three from Nick, Kiah and Len put them 19-12 up before another swing, but some late firing could not save Rogers, Dovey and Pressley from defeat.

“A total of 11 teams took part and, although low on numbers, picking a winner was tricky as over half the teams all had a good chance of winning the trophy,” added Burmingham.

“One shock in the preliminary round was the Corve/Temesters trio of Andrew Stewardson, Doog Williams and Graham Prince upsetting the fancied Ludlow Castle team of Carl Bowen, Richard Lane and Mal Griffiths and coming from behind to do so in winning 21-20 after being 20-16 down.”
