Sally Clee claims Averages Winners Classic title
Already a winner at national junior level, Shropshire star Sally Clee is now a British Ladies champion on the senior stage.
The 22-year-old became the first ever county winner of the Averages Winners Classic, writes Malcolm Fletcher.
A 21-17 victory over Andrea Buckley of Yorkshire in the final at Wombourne took the Wrockwardine Wood bowler to the title, trophy and £200 first prize.
Clee had beaten Buckley 21-7 at St Georges in last year’s county championship semi-finals as she topped Shropshire’s averages and the county went on to be crowned champions.
And she looked unstoppable again on Saturday as she opened with a 21-8 success over Jayne Hamilton (South Yorkshire) and then beat Tamsin Birkett (Mid Cheshire) 21-16.
Two 21-12 cards followed as the 2012 British Ladies Junior Merit winner swept into the final with wins over Doris Cargill (Cheshire) and Pat Conchie (North Lancs & Fylde).
British Ladies comps chief Joan Wrigley said: “Well done to all the bowlers – you treated us to some superb bowling – and congratulations to Sally.”
Her triumph shouldn’t have come of too much of a surprise, given she won the Mid Shropshire Mixed Doubles with her partner Jamie King just two weeks ago.
Now Clee, who works as an administrative assistant for Oswestry-based building contractors J R Pickstock, hopes to help the Wrockites regain the Shrewsbury Ladies League title from arch rivals Meole Brace.
