Castlefields now back in title race
Castlefields are right back in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League title race after a big away win at Chester Road.
The Queen Street club took advantage of defeats for top two Newport and Sir John Bayley to move within 10 points of the leaders. Mike Beer had their best result to 13, one of seven winners to secure an 11-5 (227-218) success.
Captain Alan Peach said: “It was a great result on a very fast and difficult green.
“The team is playing well at the moment and the atmosphere amongst the players is brilliant. Good mention to Ade Rowe and Rich Goddard, who have hit form.”
Steve Rogers led the way for the Roaders, who sit one off the bottom, with a 21-13 win.
Sir John Bayley lost 10-4 (220-187) at Hanwood ahead of their trip to Newport on Friday.
Paul Evans was their best winner with a 21-9 verdict while Glyn Wellings impressed for Hanwood with a 21-6.
Wem USC almost earned their first away win in three years but had to settle for a 9-6 (200-200) draw at Burway.
Connor Whitehall won a thriller 21-20 against Jolyon Partridge at No.12 to leave the sides level on chalks despite Wem having seven winners.
Skipper Scott Thomas said: “It was an extremely pleasing, if not slightly disappointing, result for us.
“We went with a game plan and it worked really well with some fantastic individual performances.
“Connor’s win epitomised our fighting spirit in away games this season! It would have been nice to pick up one extra chalk from somewhere to give us the win and an extra two points but I’d have taken nine before the game – I’d have snatched your hand off to be honest
“Above all it was so nice to play on a green that was in brilliant condition against a team who supported their own players. Competitive games can be played in the right spirit in this league and there needs to be a lot more of that.”
Derek Wright had Wem’s biggest win with a 21-3, almost matched by Burway’s Kiah Roberts (21-4).
Ifton had a decent return in a 9-5 (226-202) defeat at Meole Brace, Dave Bond leading the way with a 21-9.
