Shropshire's Callum Wraight equals record of 26 bowls trophies
Shropshire bowls superstar Callum Wraight has achieved something this year that even he thought was a mission impossible.
By winning the Allscott Heath Open on Saturday, the Castlefields king has managed to match his own record-breaking feat in the sport.
The 38-year-old pocketed another £300 by beating Sam Millward of Wrockwardine Wood 21-14 in the final of a competition played on the village club’s artificial green.
“Winning the Allscott title means I have equalled my record of 26 tournament wins that I achieved back in 2022,” said a proud Wraight.
“As you can imagine, I’m extremely chuffed to have got to that milestone again – it’s something I didn’t think I would repeat if I’m honest.
“When I break the season down though it’s not only the 26 comp wins, but to add that to that I’ve won the Premier League averages with 24 wins out of 24 and also its most wins award.
“I also, earlier in the season, got presented with the county player of the year award and broke the record with 23 consecutive county wins – which is more than anyone in the history of the sport.”
He’s been delighted to be part of the Castlefields Premier League domination too and their British Super Cup triumph, adding: “All in all it’s been a very special season.
“We also had the birth of our third child in the summer and I don’t think that any of my individual success would have been possible without tremendous support from my family – Zoe (partner) in particular – and also my sponsors for their continued support as that has been amazing.
”Wraight came out on top of a strong field of 32 at Allscott Heath, club chairman Chris Hayward saying: “The standard of bowling was high on an all-weather green that received positive comments.”
Sir John Bayley’s Scott Harries, enjoying a stunning end to the season, was Wraight’s 21-15 semi-final victim while Millward was beating Peter Grimston (St Georges) 21-9 in a comp backed by SJ Roberts Homes.
Getting a Shropshire club back into the top bowls league that covers the Midlands is the aim for its Telford-based secretary.
Wrockwardine Wood were the last from the county to play in the Summit Garage Staffordshire Premier League in 2022.
But before that St Georges were Premier Division champions as recently as 2016 and Callum Wraight of Castlefields topped the premier averages in 2019.
“We currently have one space to join the league for 2025 – and it would be great to get a team from Shropshire back in it after having a few before,” said Burroughs.
Matches are eight-a-side and on Monday nights and clubs need to be based within 29 miles of Woodfield Social & Sports Club in Wolverhampton to beeligible.
