Tony Jones wins cleanly over 'Dirty Dan'

Telford's Tony Jones gave nearly half a stone away to his opponent and still came away with another professional win on Saturday night.

The banger from Brookside was matched with Dan Carr on Tommy Owens' show in the Holte Suite at Aston Villa Football Club.

Carr came in overweight for the bout, which continued as there was no title on the line, but heavier 10oz gloves were introduced, writes Craig Birch.

Jones, who is managed by Kellie Maloney, was determined nothing would stop him recording his fourth win in his debut year of professional boxing.

He was given very little room to work but managed to hurt Carr to the body with the left hook, although the extra padding blunted their effect.

'Blaze' sucked it up when he was tagged with wild inswinging shots, too, and kept himself mobile to last the distance.

There was no removing Carr, who has only been stopped once in 84 paid contests, so Jones had to settle for a 40-36 points landslide victory.

The 25-year-old, who has yet to lose a round as a pro, said: "I'm happy with the result, but not so pleased with how the fight panned out.

"It wasn't great to watch and I guess they call him 'Dirty Dan' for a reason! He knows every trick in the book and is horrible to box against.

"I know how tough he is and I'd heard he was a tricky fighter, but he also spoils and frustrates you. He knocked me out of my rhythm a bit.

"The weight made a difference, too, as he wanted to hold a lot and run the clock down. I don't think he could have taken many body shots with 8oz gloves, either.

"I knew what I had to do and I got the result I wanted. It was another learning experience against a tough journeyman, which is what I need."

Jones' pro career had previously seen shut-out points wins over centurion Matt Seawright and the most experienced active fighter in the country, Kristian Laight.

They were sandwiched around a first round TKO of Dean Evans, going some way towards proving his reputation as a puncher.

He now seems to have found a home on Owens' shows at Villa, where he's slated to return for his next bout in February for another four-rounder.

Maloney was on hand to watch his latest win, with all parties meeting to discuss plans for 2016. Jones added: "She's very happy with where we are."
