The 27-year-old, who retired from the game ahead of the 2016 season due to a serious heart condition, was chosen to ring the bell before the start of play on day one of the opening Test at Lord's.

He has a special connection with opponents South Africa, with six of his seven Test matches for England coming against the Proteas.

Taylor played an important role in England’s 2-1 series victory over South Africa on their own turf in 2015/16, helping his side win the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy.

Taylor, who also used to play in the Birmingham League with Shrewsbury, tweeted: "It was a great honour to ring the bell at the home of cricket! #specialmoment"
