AFC Telford show branded 'unacceptable'

Assistant boss Larry Chambers branded AFC Telford United's performance "unacceptable" as their four-game unbeaten run came to an end at Corby Town.

The Bucks were beaten 3-2 in a game dominated by goalkeeping calamities, the result launching the hosts off the foot of the National League North table and sending the visitors tumbling back into the drop zone.

And Chambers felt the performance was simply not good enough, saying: "We told to the players that, when you come to places like Corby, the pitch is not like our own.

"You have to dig in deep and show defensive qualities and we didn't do that. From the word go we didn't start well, gave a silly goal away and it's always an uphill battle from then on.

"Putting that to one side, I thought the whole performance was unacceptable."

Callum Ball's strike put Corby, who had not won for 13 games, ahead on 15 minutes but the Bucks levelled through Dave Hibbert, after the striker pounced on an error by home keeper Paul Walker.

Clayton McDonald put the hosts back in front before another Walker clanger allowed Connor McCarthy to level it up before the break.

But Bucks goalkeeper James Montgomery dropped a corner at the feet of Greg Mills on the hour mark, for what proved to be the winner.

Chambers continued: "In recent weeks, the emphasis has been on performance rather than results.

"We always believe if you keep putting in consistent performances you will get your rewards. We have had that in recent weeks but today too many players fell below those standards.

"We said in the team-talk before the game you have to prepare yourself right, you have to be right mentally.

"You have to play percentage football and it is all about making the right decision at the right time - you probably don't get to play as much football as you would like.

"I think the players ignored those instructions. I thought we made the wrong decisions. The disappointing thing is, as bad as we played, we probably had enough chances to win the game."

Confirming Hibbert will be assessed this week after being forced off with a groin injury, Chambers also backed Montgomery to recover, following his latest uncertain display.

He said: "Monty is going through one of those periods. We all know how good he is and how good he has been for us since coming to the club.

"But he is probably at fault for the goal at FC United on Tuesday and then, if he is honest, probably at fault for two goals today.

"He has just got to work hard and get through it. If he was here now, he would put his hand up."
