Chambers sticking by out-of-form goalkeeper

Struggling AFC Telford goalkeeper James Montgomery has been backed to come through his current slump.

The 21-year-old has cut an uncertain figure in recent games, with his mistake in Saturday's 3-2 National North defeat at Corby Town leading directly to the hosts' winning goal.

Montgomery was also at fault for the goal Telford conceded in their 3-1 win at FC United of Manchester last week, but management duo Rob Smith and Larry Chambers have no plans to take their No.1 out of the firing line.

Instead, the highly-rated shot-stopper will be asked to play through his troubles, with Chambers tipping him to emerge stronger for it.

"With keepers it is difficult, his confidence will have been affected by Saturday," said Chambers.

"He will have come off knowing he should have done better. We will probably get back to basics and try to build him up.

"He is one of the players who has been excellent for us. So I am not going to suddenly start looking to replace him."

Montgomery has been an ever-present for the Bucks this season and Chambers added: "I don't think (taking him out the firing line) is what needs to happen. It is one of those ones where he needs to keep playing in order to come through it."
