AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith has reiterated his commitment to keeping the club in the National League North.

The New Bucks Head chief has committed himself to the cause of keeping the club at step six of the football pyramid, despite them being six points adrift at the foot of the table.

Smith and Larry Chambers have overseen four league wins in 18 since taking over from Steve Kittrick.

A disastrous festive spell saw them limp to defeat at relegation rivals Hednesford Town before late heartbreak saw them go down to Gloucester City – who were also in the drop zone – on Monday afternoon.

But the manager has come out fighting and said: "I'm 1,000 per cent committed to this. Why not? This is my job, so I am. It gets harder with each week that goes by.

"I know people want answers, but this club has been losing for a long time now and there's a bit of a habit in there. There's a lack of confidence and we're trying everything we can, we really are.

"Yes (the players still believe in it). We'll dust ourselves back down again."

Smith has targeted three wins on the bounce as a way to lift spirits.

They host his former employers Hednesford Town for the return fixture on Saturday before trips to Stockport County and Gainsborough Trinity.

He added: "There needs to be wins. We know that we need wins quickly, we know that. We acknowledge the position that we're in, we need three wins on the bounce pretty quickly.

"But nobody is going to throw the towel in, there was no heart to hearts after the Gloucester game. I can't ask for any more than that."

With much of the second half of the season still to be played, Smith insisted that there is still plenty of time for the situation to be turned around.

He said: "We've got 19 games, there's a lot of football to be played. We've got to keep believing. It's only just the turn of the year, that's what we've got to remember.

"We only need to get some sort of a run together – but it needs to be quickly."
