AFC Telford have 'a team full of targets'

AFC Telford United manager Rob Smith is in talks with no less than '10 or 11' transfer targets as he looks to reshuffle his squad.

The Bucks saw a number of first-team players head out last weekend with short-term and loan deals ending, allowing Smith room to manoeuvre.

And Smith, who leads his side into a giant three-day double-header starting at Stockport County tomorrow before the visit of Hednesford Town on Tuesday, has been exploring a number of avenues.

He said: "We're not really low on numbers just yet. There are still some here who aren't playing and we're constantly trying to move them on.

"But the lads that have left have given us a bit of scope to do something. We're making significant movements and there could be deals announced at any time.

"It's a busy time with us heading into a three-game week. We're in discussions with in the region of 10 or 11 players at the moment.

"January is a busy time. Movements at the top (higher leagues) can have a knock-on effect to us."

Sam Austin and Liam Slade returned to Burton Albion, while defender Jack Deaman headed back to Cheltenham Town and forward Callum Hassan left.

Lively winger Austin is set to seal another loan deal at the New Bucks Head, while Smith also revealed that Deaman was one of the group of players they are looking at.

The return of the loan players also frees up potential movements for Smith. National League North clubs are permitted no more than five loan players in a match-day squad.

The Bucks have goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne, Graham Hutchison, Richard Peniket and Jordan Wynter on loan.

But Austin is expected to follow, should the 19-year-old receive the all-clear from League One outfit Burton Albion.
