Rob Smith: A massive result for AFC Telford

Delighted boss Rob Smith reckons AFC Telford United's 1-0 win at Stockport County was one of the biggest in the club's history.

Lucas Dawson's 88th minute penalty earned the Bucks a vital three points at Edgeley Park, to pull them back toward their relegation rivals.

Though they remain bottom of National League North, they are now just four points from safety.

Smith said: "It was a massive win. It is getting to the stage where we need wins more than draws - and the latter would normally be a good result here

"They are under pressure a bit here and their crowd were getting on their backs. I always felt if we hung in there we would get a chance. I think we had more chances than them in the end."

In a game of few chances, Ryan Rowe went close for the Bucks during the first half, before goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne denied Stockport's John Marsden and Glenn Rule - the latter in stoppage time.

Smith praised the character of his injury-hit squad, adding: "I can't question the effort the players are giving me. We had 13 fit players today, had to shove people into positions and hope for the best.

"I keep saying we need a bit of luck and maybe we got it at the end. This might be something which can help us kick on.

"The players have not left anything out there today. We will not be getting carried away with it but this was a big result for the club."

"It felt like the old days. It was backs against the wall stuff. We have a small squad at the moment and we are battling away. It's a welcome three points."
