AFC Telford sweat on John Cofie's fitness

AFC Telford United are sweating on the fitness of John Cofie after manager Rob Smith revealed the striker may have damaged his cruciate ligaments.

The former Manchester United youth player was forced off less than half an hour into Saturday's 2-1 National North defeat to table-topping Solihull Moors.

The only positive from his departure was the fact substitute Josh Wilson came on and netted a debut goal.

Manager Rob Smith praised his new signing and admitted he was devastated his side got nothing from Saturday's game.

He said: "John has got a potential knee ligament injury, but I don't think it's too bad. It's just a tweak I think.

"But I thought Wilson was tremendous when he came on and looked a real quality player. He will get goals for us and all round his performance was good.

"I think having more attacking options is the key and I think we will cause teams problems going forward."

Smith praised his players – and the fans – for not folding when his side went two goals down and said it was proof his team was still more than capable of avoiding the drop.

He said: "We still really believe and I thought the fans were fantastic getting behind us again.

"At 2-0 we could have folded – and we would have in the past – but we carried on and I think if we had got the second goal we would have gone on to win it."

Smith also bemoaned his side's luck and thought Solihull captain Theo Streete was lucky to get away with a yellow card, following a lunge at Jack Rea.

He said: "It's a red card. There's two feet off the ground but I tell you what, that is not the thing that gets me.

"In the second-half Graham Hutchison's shirt was pulled off his back, right in front of the referee, and it was a penalty.

"But he didn't give it. I thought it was an embarrassing performance by the referee."
