Telford keen to extend Harry Burgoyne loan

Goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne's immediate future will be decided this week – with AFC Telford United keen to extend his loan.

The second month of the 19-year-old Wolves shot-stopper's stay expires this weekend, when the Bucks have no game.

That means Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Solihull Moors was the last game of his current spell – unless it is extended.

Assistant boss Larry Chambers has been impressed with the Ludlow-born shot-stopper.

And Chambers hinted he would be happy for Burgoyne to stay on, saying: "This is Harry's second month and I don't know what Wolves' view is going to be when that's up.

"There's the week to go so a lot of it is dictated to by Wolves.

"Harry's been excellent and it's been difficult for Monty (James Montgomery) because he really has been brilliant since we've been at the club.

"We're fortunate Wolves have loaned us a keeper of that quality and for the time being Monty is at the club as well."

Burgoyne came in when Montgomery dislocated a finger in the club's 2-0 defeat at Hednesford Town on Boxing Day.

He has played eight games, conceding 11 goals, since replacing the previously ever-present Montgomery.

Chambers reckons Burgoyne is ahead in the pecking order by virtue of taking his opportunity, despite referring to Montgomery as the club's No 1 goalkeeper.

He added: "Harry came in when Monty got injured and he's done well. Monty works hard in training and he probably is our No 1 keeper, really – only Harry has done well and has got the shirt.

"He's justified it and I think Monty acknowledges that. We've always been the sort of managers where, if someone comes in and does well, they keep the shirt – we don't really have favourites."

Telford's performances have improved of late and Chambers reckons the players believe they can dodge the drop from National League North.

He said: "We've been close to that a couple of times but there's still some positivity – I think the players know if we can put a run together, we'll be OK.

"They've finally come to terms with this now that, with the quality of the players, there's an improvement but results haven't always shown it.

"There's a belief there, but we just need that bit of momentum that's missing. The squad has evolved and we're always trying to improve it.

"We're still hoping to find the right combination and right mix to enable us to win three or four on the trot."
