AFC Telford's John Cofie shocked by physicality of division

John Cofie has compared the kicking he gets playing for AFC Telford United to something from PlayStation – but reckons it proves defenders see him as a threat.

The Bucks have turned their fortunes around since the former Manchester United youngster joined the club in January.

Cofie has scored four of the 23 goals Telford have netted in the last 10 games, of which Rob Smith's side have won five and drawn two to give their National League North survival chances a real shot in the arm.

Rob Smith's in-form side go into Saturday's visit of rock-bottom Corby Town three points clear of the drop zone – although third-from-bottom Lowestoft have two games in hand – and six clear of their opponents this weekend.

Ghana-born Cofie reckons he has been targeted for some rough stuff because of his pedigree having come through the ranks at Old Trafford.

He said: "I was speaking to one of the lads after my first game and I thought 'Wow - this is mad'.

"It was like something on PlayStation when you just kick anyone and the referee doesn't even notice it!"

"I've have to deal with it and get used to it quickly. You have to accept it and if that's the case it means they're threatened by me.

"That's something I'm thriving on and in my head."

National League North is the lowest level 23-year-old Cofie has played at in his career, but he accepts the football in the sixth tier can be uncompromising and relishes the challenge.

"I know what this league is about," he said. "I know how to handle it now and it's been a good experience because football is different at every level.

"Some levels it's total football with no battling, but I'm more than happy to adapt to any level I play at.

"I have no problem with it whatsoever."

Meanwhile, Telford are still assessing centre back Graham Hutchison, who went off early on in Saturday's 1-0 win at Harrogate with an Achilles injury.

Midfielder Mike Grogan, who scored the winner, stands by to continue in his place at the back.
