Corby boss: Telford are too good to go down

Corby Town boss Tommy Wright insists relegation rivals AFC Telford United have too much quality to go down.

Rock-bottom Corby are five points adrift of safety, while Telford have climbed to 17th.

The latter position comes following the Bucks' excellent 1-0 success at Harrogate last weekend, their third straight win and fourth game unbeaten.

Wright believes Rob Smith's side deserve to be playing at their current level and feels they will stay out of trouble.

But he is backing his players to go to the New Bucks Head and boost their own hopes of avoiding the drop.

The Steelmen boss said: "You look at Telford and they're a big football club so, for the neutral, you don't really want to see them going down.

"They have great facilities, big support and they have some money as well. They're a club who should be playing at this level, if not higher.

"I think there are other teams around them who are more at threat. I said a little while ago they'd have too much to go down, and the last few weeks have proved that."

The Steelmen remain at the foot of the National League North despite a 0-0 draw at Tamworth last Saturday.

They created the best chance missed by Greg Mills, but a draw ended a run of three successive defeats.

Wright knows he can't play down the importance of tomorrow's clash.

He added: "It's going to be a massive game. It will be hard fought and they'll be thinking if they can beat us, they'll almost be safe.

"From our point of view, we need to try to get more points on the board. It's set up nicely."

Wright insists there is still a "big belief" within the squad that the Steelmen can beat the drop.

And the manager, who named himself on the bench last Saturday, believes he has plenty of competition for places for the run-in and a healthy team spirit.

He added: "There is big belief – I think I have a dressing room that's together. We're all fighting for the same cause. I still believe we'll get out of it.

"I'm looking at my bench and I have options. It's a squad game and, when these boys get their chance, they have to take it.

"There will be some who will be frustrated but it's good to have serious competition for places. It keeps everyone on their toes."

The Corby boss also praised goalkeeper Sam Donkin and his defence after they kept their first clean sheet in six outings, since a 2-0 win against the same opponents on February 13.

He said: "I was delighted. They've kept two clean sheets against Tamworth in the past few weeks and that's a good effort."
