Rob Smith calls Telford 'lazy' despite win

Boss Rob Smith has promised AFC Telford United will not put in any more 'lazy performances' – after seeing his side win 3-0 to edge closer towards safety.

The manager pulled no punches following Bucks' comprehensive win against bottom side Corby Town.

The win moved Telford four points clear of the National League North drop zone and nine ahead of Corby and Hednesford, who are in the bottom two spots.

But Smith promised the fans his side would not start such a crucial match so slowly again and praised his centre-back pairing of Curtis Tilt and Mike Grogan for laying the foundations for a crucial win.

He said: "I thought we were absolutely dreadful first-half. I thought we were lazy in our passing. I thought everything we had been doing, we didn't do first half.

"Fortunately, we got to half-time and we had a little bit of a chat and I thought second-half we saw the game out quite well.

"At the moment it isn't about the opposition, it's about us – and I thought we were lazy.

"I thought we were lazy in training and I told them at half-time I thought we turned up lazy, and I wasn't going to accept it.

"But second-half the lads stepped up to the plate. It was a big game for us, a massive game."

Smith could not split the contribution made by his centre back pairing of Tilt and Grogan, after both put in dominant performances.

He said: "I thought 'Grogs' was outstanding but I've got to say that Curtis played really well too and their best player just wanted to get off the pitch.

"He will go on to bigger and better things. I don't want to lose him but I have no doubt he is too good for this level."

Smith also moved to reassure fans star striker John Cofie had only come off as a precaution during the first-half, after feeling a tightening of his hamstring.
