Boss: Alfreton was AFC Telford's turning point

Boss Rob Smith has revealed the turning point to AFC Telford United's season was an ice-cold and rather unglamorous Tuesday night in Derbyshire.

The New Bucks Head chief is alluding to the 3-2 victory at Alfreton Town.

His charges came from behind in harrowing conditions to grind out a steely win against the consistent mid-table outfit.

It was the second result in their sequence of five games unbeaten and came three days after a dramatic 5-5 draw at Stalybridge Celtic.

Smith confirmed: "I don't think the moment things changed was coming from 5-2 down at Stalybridge.

"It was winning at Alfreton. We won there from behind and that's when there was really belief that we could push on.

"But it's so tight and everyone is still getting results so things can chop and change very quickly."

While insisting that he knew his side would get out of trouble in National League North, he failed to predict that they would embark on such an impressive unbeaten run.

Tomorrow's home clash against play-off sitting Tamworth will be an opportunity for the Bucks to extend their unbeaten streak to six games and potentially climb to 14th place, should results go their way.

Smith admitted: "No, I didn't see it coming if I'm totally honest. I certainly thought that we had enough to get out of trouble and that we were capable.

"I didn't think we'd be able to go to Harrogate and Alfreton and win. The confidence in the group is very high now.

"There is belief and we've added quality – that's key. We're scoring goals and we fancy ourselves, which wasn't the case before.

"Whatever it is, it's just worked. We rely on having the right mix of midfielders lately and the defence has been strong.

"That's been key for us lately, the defence has came to the party."

But safety is a long way from being confirmed and the Bucks boss insists he is still finding the relegation scrap tough going.

He said: "Not really (enjoying), it's nice to win but it's still an anxious time. I don't want to go down and won't relax until we're mathematically safe. Until then, it's still business."
