Rob Smith: AFC Telford are not safe yet

AFC Telford United manager Rob Smith admitted his side are still in a 'dogfight' for survival and are not safe from the drop.

The Bucks ended an impressive seven-game unbeaten run in the league with a 3-0 home defeat to table-toppers Solihull Moors.

Despite the recent run, Smith said his team are still fighting to stay in the National League North.

He said: "Normally, I would be giving full barrels to my players after a result like that, but I haven't because they have been awesome for me over the last six weeks.

"We have allowed ourselves to have a day like that. But they better make sure it is the last.

"We are in a dogfight and I am sick and tired of people telling me that we are safe.

"It is all I heard before the game. Solihull players were coming up to me saying 'you're safe.' We are not safe and I think the result established that."

Lowestoft Town and Brackley, below Telford in the table, both drew on Saturday, shortening the gap to the Bucks by a point.

But Smith said: "I am not interested in how the other teams have got on. We have got to go and get wins ourselves.

"If we look after ourselves we will be all right. I am sick of looking at how other teams are doing."

Smith is now looking forward to a mini-break for his team and hopes the players will come back refreshed and earn a good result at North Ferriby on Saturday.

He also dismissed any thoughts of complacency among his players. He said: "No, not at all. What they have done is just commit horrendous mistakes to give goals away."

The Bucks boss has now urged his players to dust themselves off and push on from the defeat.

He said: "Everyone has patted each other on the back over the last six weeks and we have been superb. Now we have to show our character and go again."
