Rob Smith on course for AFC Telford feat

AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith has saluted shot-stopper James Montgomery - while claiming National League North survival would be his greatest feat.

The Bucks goalkeeper has bounced back from a troublesome performance against Solihull Moors to cap a full recovery with an stand-out showing in the Brackley Town stalemate.

And Smith was full of praise for the Sunderland-based custodian, who kept out a first-half penalty from Town forward Steve Diggin.

He said: "I've just told Monty it's from zero to hero. He's come from a poor game against Solihull but he's been fantastic since and he was excellent last night."

While the draw at Brackley saw Lowestoft Town draw level with the Bucks on goal difference, the Telford boss was still satisfied to look at the outstanding turnaround in a positive light.

They were seemingly stranded at the foot of the table in mid-February and a run of seven games unbeaten - winning five in a row - looked to have got them out of trouble.

But the current run, which stretches to four without victory or even scoring a goal, is a cause for concern as their search for safety continues.

The New Bucks Head chief added: "If you'd have asked me three months ago to be in our hands going into the last games I'd take it and we're still in there fighting and believing.

"If we survive then it's a massive pat on the back to everybody because it's been a real tough time."

He added that keeping the club in the division was rank up there with promotion campaigns and cup wins across his career.

He continued: "Without a doubt (it's the greatest achievement), I've never been through it before and never want to again.

"But I would tell you keeping this club up with the position it's been in would be my most satisfying moment - beating some promotions and cups, it really would.

"This is a dark place to be in, it's really really hard work it's about keeping your nerve, it's horrible but we're really really fighting and we will as hard as we can on Saturday."
