Rob Smith: AFC Telford stuck at the job

Boss Rob Smith went through 'every emotion' as AFC Telford United sealed their National League North status for next term with a 2-0 victory over Worcester.

It was a nervy affair at the New Bucks Head, which the hosts edged thanks to a Tom Sharpe own goal and a Sean Clancy strike in added time.

The two sides had reason to celebrate after the final whistle as Brackley Town's 1-1 draw at Curzon Ashton meant they are both safe.

Each have four points above the relegation places with one game left to play. Smith said: "I think I've been through every emotion today.

"We are hearing results from elsewhere and I'm thinking we need to win the game. We had to make changes and go for it.

"I couldn't see it (a goal coming) to be honest, but that group has kept believing all the way through and I think we deserved the win.

"I'm really pleased Worcester are safe as well. We'll lock horns again next year."

This season has been far more difficult than him and assistant Larry Chambers first imagined it would be.

Smith added: "I think Larry has gone on record saying we were probably arrogant in our attitude.

"We thought we could come in and, it was only early in the season, we can't hide behind too much, we thought we would have enough about us to get it done fairly quickly.

"It didn't pan out like that so we have had to make changes and changes again.

"Even until today, a few weeks ago we thought we were out of it, and then we were not, but I've got to say the players, over the last few months, have been through everything together as a group.

"We have been focused on the job at hand and I think they deserve to stay up."
