Telford 2 Worcester 0 - Report and pictures

There was a party atmosphere at The New Bucks Head as AFC Telford United beat Worcester City 2-0 and sealed their National League North survival.

The Bucks got the all-important three points after a Tom Sharpe own goal, and a strike from substitute Sean Clancy in added time.

They had done what they needed to do, and fans waited nervously to hear Brackley Town's result at Curzon Ashton.

And when they found out it ended 1-1, there was a huge roar from the Bucks faithful.

They are safe, four points ahead of the relegation places heading into the final game of the campaign at Chorley. Visitors Worcester will also remain in the division for next term.

Both goals came late on but the hosts could have been ahead after only two minutes. The lively Connor McCarthy won a free-kick, Lucas Dawson whipped in a splendid cross which flew just past the head of Curtis Tilt.

The attacking trio of McCarthy, Izak Reid and Josh Wilson were combining well, and the latter hit a first-time effort just over the crossbar.

It was a real frantic start and emotions were running high, particularly for Worcester striker Lee Hughes.

The former West Bromwich Albion man floored Tilt and the home faithful thought he swung an elbow, but referee Paul Graham did not and Hughes went unpunished.

The visitors' first effort came on the 22-minute mark, with full-back Tyler Weir firing wide from long-range. Danny Jackman then gave Telford a scare with a free-kick which was cleared, on the stretch, by Dwayne Samuels.

Dawson then swung in three pinpoint corners. The first was met by Graham Hutchison, and cleared over the bar. The second by Curtis Tilt, with the same outcome, and nothing, ultimately, came of the third.

Neither team could be faulted for their effort, but there were no moments of real quality in the first period. Just after half-time, full-back Dwayne Samuels hit a delicious cross into the area but it was met by nobody.

The hosts were lacking a cutting edge but things took a turn for the better after the introductions of John Cofie, for Lucas Dawson, and Sean Clancy, who replaced Izak Reid.

Tilt, who boss Rob Smith said after the match played on with a broken rib, was booked for a challenge on Worcester substitute Deon Burton, after McCarthy had already entered the referee's book.

Cofie was then given a yellow after he threw the ball over his shoulder in frustration, after not receiving a free-kick, and it hit the linesman.

The tenacious McCarthy was the man to turn the game on its head with just 15 minutes to go.

He breezed past Weir on the left-hand side, dribbled towards the area and fizzed in a low ball, which Worcester defender Tom Sharpe diverted into his own net.

The Telford fans were relieved and elated in equal measure, but the atmosphere became pretty tense up until the point where the hosts capitalised on some slack defending to double their advantage.

The Bucks were awarded a free-kick out wide which was chipped into Cofie, he played it back to Clancy who made no mistake and smashed the ball into the far corner.

Just before the final whistle went, McCarthy was given a standing ovation as he was replaced by Dave Hibbert.

After the game finished and news of Brackley's draw entered The New Bucks Head, the fans rightly chanted "we are staying up".

A remarkable turnaround by Rob Smith and Larry Chambers, with survival thoroughly deserved.
