Rob Smith: Bucks back on track with the fans

Rob Smith believes he has re-connected AFC Telford United with its fanbase – and revealed players were gobsmacked by the reaction to survival.

The Bucks boss reckons he has repaired the broken relationship between players and supporters that he noticed last August when returning to the club with assistant Larry Chambers.

The pair led Telford to safety in National League North in front of almost 1,400 fans with a 2-0 home win against Worcester City last Saturday amid euphoric scenes.

"One thing I said I wanted to bring back when I came was the connection between the players and the fans and I think we have that now again," said Smith.

"We're not big-time Charlies and hopefully people see that and see we want success for this club."

Smith believes the scenes of celebration gave an indication of the club's potential.

"I think some of the players who are new to Telford saw what a big club it is and what it means to people," he said.

"I kept saying to the players that I've been here when we've been promoted and I've seen them celebrating the real thing, and last week they saw us celebrating (avoiding) relegation. When the club has an ounce of success, the reaction is unbelievable. Think what it would be like if we got promoted."
