John Cofie happy to talk with AFC Telford

The 23-year-old former Manchester United FA Youth Cup winner is out of contract now the season is over, as is the case with the entire squad apart from fellow striker Dave Hibbert.

Cofie signed on non-contract forms in January, but was persuaded to pen a deal after being courted by National League Premier side Southport.

And, after helping the club to safety in National League North, the Ghana-born striker is open to the possibility of extending his stay at the New Bucks Head.

He said: "I haven't spoken to the gaffer (Rob Smith) or Larry (Chambers, assistant manager) yet and it's up to them who they want to keep.

"But if they approach me me and want to talk, I'd be happy to hear them out."

Cofie arrived at Telford in January after a short spell at National League Premier side Wrexham.

His stay at Telford has given him extended regular football for the first time in his professional career.

He added: "I've had a great time and have really enjoyed my time here. This is the first season in a few years that I've enjoyed my football because I've been playing regularly.

"So there's nothing better for me and it's been a pleasure."

Cofie echoed team-mate Sean Clancy's belief that Telford could be a force next season if they keep their squad together, with the former one of several signings since the turn of the year.

He said: "We talked in the changing room about it and Sean's definitely right.

"We truly believe if we keep the majority of the boys together, we'd definitely not be in the situation we found ourselves in because of the talent and the mentality here now."

Smith claims the players who finished the season at Chorley could have influenced his thinking on whether or not they are offered a future at Telford.

He added: "You change your mind when people perform – or if they don't."
