Waiting game for AFC Telford on signing

AFC Telford Unied boss Rob Smith is prepared to wait on his winger target – as he admitted he's 'over the moon' with his signings and forecast a top-half finish.

Smith is a big fan of Elliott Durrell who he had at Hednesford and who spent last season at Tamworth, where he finished as top scorer.

The Bucks chief refused to confirm if his target is the 26-year-old, who lives in Shrewsbury, but admits his target has the pick of clubs to choose from.

Durrell is understood to have offers from Chester from the National Premier and National League North rivals Boston, among others.

Smith, however, is looking to get all his business finished by the time the players report back for the start of pre-season training next Tuesday.

He said: "There's absolutely no change on it from Friday. I've been away at the weekend but nothing has been done on that so there's no further news.

"I can't see it (winger signing) happening but we'll see what happens day by day. He has plenty of offers, and from a higher level as well, but we'll keep tabs on it this week.

"But we start training a week on Tuesday and I want everyone in place who I want by then if I can."

Smith, however, is delighted with his summer's work so far after signing eight players.

James Hurst, Dan Preston, Ben Bailey, Lee Fowler, Callum Gittings, Michael Monaghan, Sean Williams and Danny Reynolds have all arrived.

And he has tipped Telford to finish in the top half of the National North table. He said: "I'm really pleased. Some of the signings we've made I'm over the moon with.

"We've just got to gel them together now and that's a process which starts next week, when we'll start to see how it comes together.

"We've hand-picked the players we wanted and there are players such as Lee Fowler and James Hurst who are big names and are going to be big players for us.

"But at the same time we've got players like Callum Gittings and Sean Williams who are experienced and will do a good job for the team.

"We've got a squad but the main thing is I don't think we'll be in a relegation battle. I think we're capable of being in the top half of the table, but it depends on how the team clicks.

"We'll have 17 or 18 players plus a couple of trialists and that will be enough."
