Tom Peers set an AFC Telford challenge

Striker Tom Peers has been told he faces a big season – but will get the chance to eclipse his 15-goal target at AFC Telford United.

Manager Rob Smith believes the 20-year-old striker, signed last week following his release from Chester, will catch the eye in National League North.

Warrington-born Peers will compete with Josh Wilson, Dave Hibbert and Danny Reynolds for a place in the Bucks' forward line.

And Smith is hoping Peers can make a major impact, with the Bucks boss: "He's a good age and it's going to be a big year for him.

"He'll either do really well and continue to progress or he might go backwards a bit.

"He'll certainly get the opportunity here. He's one of those players who will score from anywhere because he works so hard and gets in the right positions."

Peers had a busy 2015-16, with a goal in seven outings for Chester, three in nine games overall in three spells at Hednesford and eight strikes in nine matches for Marine.

Smith believes the youngster needs to settle now, adding: "He just needs to find the right club but, hopefully, it's here.

"He's still a young lad trying to find his feet in the game but there's no reason why he can't score goals in Conference North.

"If he plays all season I'd be surprised if he didn't score 15 goals. But there's quite a lot of competition up front and people need to work really hard.

"We've got Tom, Josh, Danny and 'Hibbo' plus young Zak Lilly and we might get another winger at some point.

"There are a lot of options and I wouldn't be surprised if someone falls by the wayside in pre-season."

Summer signings Dan Preston and Michael Monaghan are set for their first pre-season training tonight after holiday.

Smith will continue to run the rule over several trialists, adding: "There's a winger, a centre-half and a central midfielder. Lads come along and we have a look at them."
