AFC Telford fans are singing for blues

AFC Telford United launched their new away kit in last Saturday's friendly at Colwyn Bay with a return to the blues.

Here we look at some contrasting Bucks change strips of recent years.

Wayne Clarke gets the blues (1995-96)

Former Wolves striker Wayne Clarke arrived as player-manager in 1995-96.

He wasted no time in getting into the part by modelling the smart royal blue kit Telford were to play in.

It wasn't known whether he had any say in its choice, but Clarke was no stranger to that shade of blue.

He wore it in his pomp as a marksman of some repute with Birmingham City and Everton, where he won a league title winner's medal in 1987.

It was a more conservative strip than some of the away colours Bucks players were subsequently to adorn but was popular with fans.

Purple pain (2010-11)

When Telford paraded a new magenta and white kit in 2010, it certainly marked a move in a different direction.

As if the bright colours weren't enough, it was modelled at its unveiling by defender Will Salmon.

His tumbling flaxen hair provided a rich contrast with the gaudy shades which left those looking at it in need of wearing, well, shades.

Bold and bright, it was virtually all magenta – shirt, shorts and socks – apart from white sleeves and white trim and it left no one in any doubt as to the fact Telford were in town.

Are they Watford in disguise? (2015-16)

Given the ensuing problems with the kit at the time, this highly distinctive outfit won't be remembered with any real fondness.

They were forced to start the season wearing it home and away, due to the late arrival of the new home strip.

Results started badly and got worse as fans were forced to get used to their team playing in the unusual combination of yellow shirts and red shorts.

The team didn't score in any of their first four games, leading to the sacking of boss Steve Kittrick and the club were left rooted to the bottom of National League North.

Sky blue hope (2016-17)

Last week Telford unveiled a three-year deal with renowned sportswear manufacturers Sondico and with it a return to the blues for their latest away kit.

But this time it was a neat, modern, pleasing-on-the-eye combo of sky blue shirt with navy trim and navy shorts and socks.

Worn by the players in north Wales last Saturday, it looks classier than many of the previous kits.

It's likely to prove a winner with the fans, who could snap it up by ordering online from last weekend.
