AFC Telford 0 Solihull 0 - Report and pictures

The result didn't matter, of course, but it was AFC Telford United who were the moral winners.

Rob Smith's side had the National League North champions pinned in their own half for much of the second period.

It came with breathtaking energy on a sweltering night could only offer huge encouragement, writes Tim Nash.

Telford started seven of their 11 summer signings, with three on the bench and James Hurst out injured.

But it was the youngest of them, striker Danny Reynolds, who caught the eye as much as anyone.

High energy might be expected of a 19-year-old, but he also showed no little heart and courage and a vision beyond his years in a performance brimming with promise.

Moors had the first chance after 11 minutes when Harry White got ahead of Dwayne Samuels to shoot from point-blank range, but goalkeeper James Montgomery smothered brilliantly.

Within a minute, it was the Bucks' turn to almost snatch the lead.

Dave Hibbert charged an attempted overhead clearance from Theo Streete and found himself with only Danny Lewis to beat, but the goalkeeper reacted well to palm away.

Andy Brown was looking to find the net against his old club and went close in the 14th minute, when he ghosted on to the trialist left-back's deep cross and his header drifted inches wide.

AFC Telford United (4-3-3): Montgomery; Samuels (Edge 80), Havern (Preston 59), Bailey, Campion; Williams (Fowler 59), Monaghan (Rea 59), Gittings (Dawson 67); Evans (Peers 67), Hibbert (Wilson 59), Reynolds.

Solihull (3-5-2): Lewis; Streete, Daly, Franklin; Trialist, Byrne, Beswick, Knights, Trialist; Brown, White. Subs not used: Trialist, Cowan, Morris, Leslie, Donnell, Acton (gk).

Referee: Mark Groves.

Reynolds tested Lewis with a snapshot from a tight angle that the goalkeeper blocked with his legs.

If the first half was even, the second belonged to Telford as they created several chances.

Pressure from the Bucks saw Lewis forced to make saves from successive corners in the 55th minute.

First he pushed the ball over, after Gianuca Havern got a towering header to Sean Williams' corner with Reynolds appearing to get in a second header near the line.

Then he tipped away when Williams' resulting flag-kick hit one of his own players.

A tenacious run down the left by Reynolds presented Hibbert with an opening, but he struck his first-time shot straight at Lewis.

Smith made four substitutions in the 59th minute, but it didn't appear to disrupt Telford.

Although Jack Byrne had Montgomery scrambling to his left to keep out a swerving drive just after the hour, it was sandwiched by heavy Telford pressure in the sweltering heat.

The non-stop effort of Reynolds in particular was a pleasing feature and his cross set up Micah Evans only for Streete to get a vital touch to deflect the shot behind.

They went closer still when Lee Fowler's free-kick hit the post on 69 minutes and Josh Wilson's attempt hit Lewis.

Solihull almost grabbed an unlikely winner when Knights' shot was blocked by Dan Preston.

But Telford were by far the more impressive side and deserved their warm applause at the end.
