Team spirit could push AFC Telford on

National League North promises to be its most intriguing for years with so many bigger clubs competing to be top dog.

AFC Telford United are looking to make big improvements on last season's brush with relegation.

Here, Tim Nash looks at the league they will compete in.

1) Who's going up?

Big-spending Fylde – AFC Telford United's first-day opponents on Saturday – are the bookies' second favourites to go up.

Title favourites Halifax, Kidderminster Harriers, Altrincham will fancy their chances of an immediate return to the National Premier.

Boston and Harrogate will be looking to push on from the play-offs and Salford City will be aiming to continue their rise through the pyramid.

2) Who's going down?

Brackley Town only escaped the drop by goal difference and they look to be in for another season of struggle.

Gloucester City and Gainsborough Trinity might find things a little tougher this time around, after failing to set the division alight last term.

After failing to build on their momentum in 2015-16 following promotion, Curzon Ashton might find themselves the poor relations of Greater Manchester.

3) Surprise package

Under hard taskmasters Martin Gray and Sean Gregan, Darlington have won three promotions in four years.

Their uncompromising, no-nonsense approach is reflected in their team's fierce work ethic.

They have also made some decent signings, including former Carlisle United striker Josh Gillies, plus the support as one of five ex-Football League clubs in National League North.

They also have momentum after winning the title of the division below with 104 points.

4) Player to watch

James Poole of Salford City will be looking to add to his 20 goals last season.

It helped the Class of 92's-owned side continue their rise through non-league last campaign as the club's joint top scorer with Danny Webber.

The Stockport-born former Manchester City academy forward has the skill and vision to test defences in National League North.

5) Bucks overview

Despite the obvious strength of the league, hopes are high that AFC Telford United will be competing at the right end of the division after last season's troubles on and off the pitch.

Eleven new signings, plus the retention of striker Josh Wilson have transformed the squad.

They have three solid centre-halves, two reliable full-backs and a host of options in midfield. In addition there is youth, experience, pace, mobility and goals up front.

Perhaps the biggest asset Telford will have is their team spirit, which boss Rob Smith has built from day one of pre-season and will see them through some tough times.
